A single-car accident on Friday afternoon took^the life of a 41-yearold county resident. Harold Miller t'ompton of Amissville was killed when his car hit a tree on Rt. 729 about a half-mile south of Rt. (140, near Viewtown.
According to Trooper H. A. Newlin, who investigated the accident, Mr. Compton was travelling south on Rt. 729 at a high rate of speed when his 1978 Dodge two-door ran off the right side of the roadway and struck a tree.
Virginia State Police Sgt. M. D. Dowdy, of the Warrenton office, said Tuesday that Trooper Newlin’s report indicated that the vehicle’s speed when it left the road was estimated at 8f> miles per hour. He added that the report said that alcohol also may have been a factor, but that a final determination will not be made until the results of an autopsy are received, which usually takes about three weeks.
Mr. Compton was extricated from his vehicle by rescue personnel from Amissville and Flint Hill. An Advanced Life Support medic unit from Culpeper County Rescue Squad met the Amissville squad en route to Culpeper Memorial Hospital, and transported Mr. Compton to the hospital’s emergency room, where he was pronounced dead.
