At its March meeting, the county’s Board of Supervisors adopted a revised six-year plan for the county’s secondary roads which includes maintenance projects sought by residents at last month’s public hearing.

“I think we’ve taken care of most of the items which were brought up at that time,” noted resident engineer Robert E. Moore.

He reported that improvements to Rt. 622 await final approval of changes to the wording of a conservation easement given to the Virginia Outdoors Foundation by a landowner on that road so that the necessary right-of-way can be donated to the Department of Transportation. “We’re ready to start as soon as we get that last paperwork taken care of.”

Supervisor Mike Massie asked that the record show his request to the highway department to look into sale to his family of the abandoned section of the old road fronting the Massie property at the intersection of Routes 211 and 522.

This type of transaction is done routinely, Mr. Moore said. “It’s residue we don’t need for the maintenance of the highway.” In such cases, the department looks to sell the abandoned road section with the sale price based on an independent appraisal, he added.

The resident engineer also noted that the department has reassessed the passing zones on the two-lane portion of Rt. 211 between Washington and Sperryville and determined that “no other areas can be opened up.” Adding additional passing zones “would create a safety problem” and conversely, the two existing zones “meet our guidelines for sight distance,” he said.

Mr. Moore confirmed, however, that the existing passing zone at the intersection of Rt. 211 and the Old Hollow road (Rt. 612) has been intermittently closed to passing in response to increased accidents in that section.'
