Jarvis L. Fletcher, of Rt. 1, Washington, was graduated on Aug. 5 from the U. S. Army’s Basic Combat Training School. The eight-week course was conducted at Fort Benning, Georgia.
Jarvis is a member of the Virginia Army National Guard 1988 Infantry Buddy Platoon, a group of newly-recruited Guardsmen from all across Virginia. According to a spokesman at Ft. Benning, the young recruits endured record high temperatures during an intense and demanding course of instruction by Army regulars. Their experience included live fire training in a variety of infantry weapons plus physical conditioning exercises and other skills vital to the soldiers’ missions.
“Young Fletcher returns to Rappahannock County High School this fall as a senior," the Guard spokesman said, “tougher, a bit more experienced, and almost $1,000 richer for his efforts.” He will continue to train one weekend a month throughout the school year with his Virginia Army National Guard unit in Warrenton.
