The annual Fire School sponsored by the Rappahannock County Fire and Rescue Association will be held at the Amissville Volunteer Fire Department on Sept. 10-11 and 17-18.
According to coordinator Paul Poling, the school will offer a variety of classroom and practical courses for both novice firefighters as well as those volunteers with more experience. The courses available, and the dates, include:
Trench rescue: A 16-hour heavy rescue course which will combine classroom instruction and practical experience to familiarize students with methods to make trenches and excavations safe for victim access and removal. Emphasis will also be put on developing “pre-plans” of locally available materials and equipment. Actual sheeting and shoring of “unsafe” trenches will also be practiced. Students will be required to wear helmets with eye protection, gloves and work boots (preferably steel-toed).Sept. 17 and 18 only,
L. P. Gas: An eight-hour course on liquified petroleum gas fire suppression. Both classroom instruction and “live fire” drills using an L.P. gas tank will be included in the course. All students must bring full turnout gear and SCBA. Sept. 10 only.
Rural water supply: An eighthour course designed to provide theory and training in the use of tanker shuttles and dump sites to supply water to rural firegrounds. A major part of the course will concentrate on actual tanker shuttle operations using remote pond sites, dump tanks and pumper supply lines. Students who can supply a department tanker are encouraged to bring it with them. Full turnout gear is recommended. Sept. 11 only.
SCBA basic/MAZE trailer/ Structure fires: A 16-hour course which will begin with the basic design and operation of personal selfcontained breathing apparatus. On Saturday afternoon, each student will become familiar with SCBA using the Fairfax County MAZE trailer. On Sunday, extensive “livefire” operations will be conducted in Amissville’s smokehouse. Each student will be required to supply full turnout gear and SCBA each day.
