The days, weeks and months of this unhappy process did not include all happy days for me. There were personal confrontations, threats and unbelievable arrogance sometimes displayed by some of the “cats” who simply would not believe that these “mice” had the courage to bell them. But on this matter, the band of five mice was now united and determined. And, as I constantly reminded them, we were surrounded by an impenetrable shield if we knew our duties and carried them out in scrupulous compliance with the laws of the Commonwealth. And so it turned out.
The turning point for me on this personnel issue came, I think, with my 13-day personal “return to school”, when I undertook a complete tour of every classroom in the kindergarten, elementary and high schools, on schedule with the children themselves, doing exactly what they did and taking all tests they took, including physical education classes and lunches. We rode the school buses together in the dead of winter, to and from school.
It was the first time it had ever been done, to my knowledge, by any member of the School Board since 1870, when public schools were started in Rappahannock. In fairness to my fellow members, I
