What began as an investigation of a traffic accident Saturday morning west of Sperryville ended with the arrest of one driver on charges of driving under the influence of drugs or narcotics and possession of marijuana.
According to Trooper H. A. Newlin, a 1988 Ford Taurus rental car driven by Jonathan Francis Wilson, 30, 12703 Keswick Lane, Bowie, Md., was eastbound on Rt. 211 near Rappahannock Auto Parts when it ran into the back of a 1987 Isuzu Trooper driven by Austin Page of Manassas.
Trooper Newlin said that the impact drove the Isuzu off the right side of the road, where it overturned.
The Taurus continued on and ran off the left side of the road, narrowly missing the Hawkins fruit stand and running over an ice machine in the stand’s parking lot. It continued back across both lanes of Rt. 211 and off the right shoulder into the parking lot of Alson Atkins’s riding stable, missing several cars and a group of people standing there. After running back into the eastbound lane of Rt. 211 it again swerved back onto the right shoulder and struck a guardrail. That impact finally stopped the car, Trooper Newlin said, which came to rest with a picnic table wedged underneath its rear end.
Trooper Newlin charged Wilson with DUI and possession of marijuana. Three passengers in his vehicle were taken to Culpeper Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. One, Christopher R. Ekins, 22, also of Bowie, was charged with being drunk in public.
Three juveniles in the Page vehicle were also taken to CMH, where they were treated for minor injuries and released.
Fire and rescue units from Sperryville, Washington and Flint Hill responded to the accident. Trooper Newlin said that both vehicles were a total loss.
He said that the occupants of the Page vehicle were wearing seat belts, but that those riding in Wilson’s car were not.
Motorcyclist hurt, charged
An accident Friday afternoon on Rt. 211 between Sperryville and Thornton Gap left one man hospitalized after he lost control of his motorcycle and struck a car.
According to Trooper C. A. Moore who investigated the accident, James Flynn, 22, of Falls Church was westbound up the mountain about 2-1/2 miles east of Skyline Drive on a 1985 Honda motorcycle. He was unable to negotiate a curve due to excessive speed, Trooper Moore said, and struck an oncoming car driven by Charlotte Estes, 24, of Bridgewater, Va.
Trooper Moore charged Mr. Flynn with failure to obey highway markers. He estimated damage to the motorcycle at $500 and damage to Ms. Estes’s 1988 Ford at $1,000.
