Labor Day weekend, traditionally one of worst holiday weekends in terms of highway fatalities, officially begins Friday, Sept. 2, at 6 p.m. and entends through midnight, Monday, Sept. 5, and the Virginia State Police are preparing once again to beef up patrols in an effort to encourage safe driving practices.
Participating in Operation CARE for the 11th consecutive year, State Police will devote considerable attention to heavily-traveled highways such as the interstates, major primary highways and some secondary roads. CARE is an acronym for Combined Accident Reduction Effort, a state-sponsored national program operational during the major holiday weekends of Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving.
