Mrs. Anderson, whose daughter Jennifer began school in Wakefield’s kindergarten and will be a senior there this year, recalled telling Dr. Lynn once that he should raise the school’s tuition so he could hire some help. “He replied, ‘I can’t do that. If I raise the cost we will exclude some students.’ That was Dr. Lynn — he wanted the best for as many students who could take advantage of it.
“He has provided a tremendous service to the community,” Mrs. Anderson said. “He loaned buses to the 4-H groups and to the Scouts. He not only provided the bus, he came along and drove! Whenever he felt there was a need, he filled it.”
She added that he was never satisfied with the status quo, “constantly changing, trying new things and attempting to make the programs at the school better.”
Sometimes, she acknowledged, Dr. Lynn’s ideas brought him into the vortex of controversy. “He was doing what he thought was best, and not everyone else agreed. . .But he always had the best interests of the kids at heart.”
And, Father Albert said, it was not just his students who felt his influence. “He has left a tremendous impression on his family. His is a great heritage which they will carry on and hand down.”
Dr. Lynn is survived by his wife, Pamela Warren Lynn; three sons, Mathew Lynn of Washington, Wynn Voeks of Wildwood, N. J. and Douglas Voeks of Charlottesville; three daughters, Katie, Marcie, and Welby Lynn, all of Washington; his mother, Mrs. Clydetta E. Lynn of Huntly; and two sisters, Mrs. Leonard Shaw of Front Royal and Mrs. Molly Frazier of Hudson, Ohio.
A rosary service was held in Dr. Lynn’s memory at Clore Funeral Home on Aug. 29. Funeral services were held on Aug. 30 at Precious Blood Catholic Church in Culpeper, with Father Albert Verbeke and Father Maurice du Castillon officiating. Dr. Lynn was buried at St. Peter’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia.
Pallbearers were Wynn Voeks, Douglas Voeks, Richard Viguerie, Timothy Tarr, Tony Wilson and William Wilson. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. Edwin Eastham, Charles E. Leadman, Robert King, Philippe Cognan, Nelson Lane, Col. Robert R. Dickey, and Peter Quinn.
Clore Funeral Home of Culpeper handled the funeral arrangements.
