The Washington Town Council filled two vacancies on its planning commission last week, appointing Mitzie Young and Louise Vandort to openings created by the resignation of Gloria Robinson and the expiration of Wallace Critzer’s term.
Camille Harris and Arthur Neufeld also expressed interest in the positions, but of the four candidates, only Mrs. Harris attended Wednesday’s meeting.
Mrs. Vandort was nominated to the commission by a unanimous vote of the five council members present. Mrs. Young was appointed by a vote of 3-2, with William Wickens, Mayor Dean Morehouse and Evelyn Willis voting for her; and Nan Thomasson and Peter Skowronski voting for Mrs. Harris.
The appointments mean that the commission is now operating with its full complement of members. Mrs. Young and Ms. Vandort join Chairman Wickens, vice-chairman Bill Frizzell, Joyce Kramer, Reinhardt Lynch and Susan Parrish on the board, which oversees the town’s planning and ordinance process.
Under state law, the town council must submit requests for revisions or extensions of the town’s ordinances to the planning commission for review. The commission then submits a recommendation to the council, which is free to agree with or reject the commission’s recommendation.
