Superintendent David Gangel expected Rappahannock schools to have another year of grace for compliance with the state’s mandate for remedial education, but despite the early deadline for implementation this year, the new programs got under way smoothly.
The award of a $16,000 grant from the state helped, since no money for the expansion of remedial education was included in the 198889 budget. According to Dr. Gangel, the grant will pay for materials and the services of a remedial education coordinator who will teach classes at the high school and assist elsewhere as time permits while also developing a corps of trained volunteers who can carry on the program in future years.
The new classes at the elementary and high schools serve* children* who have scored in the bottom 25 percent on standardized tests.
