Although cereals are grain products, the amount and kind of fat used in their production should be considered before purchasing. This is especially true for commercial granolas in which fat may account for as much as 38 percent of the total calories.

As for type of fat, research has implicated saturated fats such as coconut oil and palm kernel oil, in elevating serum cholesterol and increasing risks of cardiovascular disease.

Instead, check ingredient lists for polyunsaturated fats, such as unhydrogenated or only partially hydrogenated soybean oil, corn oil and cottonseed oil. These have been shown to reduce elevated serum cholesterol.
