dents will take the remedial classes during their enrichment periods. At the high school, the bulk of students will get the extra reading or math instruction in place of an elective or study hall. Some, however, have opted for after-school classes which will run from 3:15 to 4:15. During fall and spring, those youngsters would be able to ride the 5:15 activity bus, but the transportation is discontinued in winter months. Out of the 15 attending the after-school classes, only two have transportation needs, “and that’s just something that has to be worked out,” Dr. Gangel told the School Board.

At the end of the year, participants will again be given the chance to test out of the remedial program, and the superintendent expressed hope that numbers will then drop significantly. “Our goal is to do such a good job that we put ourselves out of the remedial education business. I know that’s probably never going to happen because we’re always going to have a few students who are performing below grade level and need additional help, but I want us to work towards that goal.”
