For 34 years, Mr. Bruce was the county’s animal warden, a post he held up until his death. He also farmed on his property on Route 211 just west of Rediviva Bridge.
Prior to that, he served as a park ranger at Shenandoah National Park. That was at a time when the park was new, before World War II.
Mr. Bruce is survived by his wife, Mrs. Pauline Hawkins Bruce of Sperryville; one daughter, Miss Diane Bruce of Washington, Va*; one son, Manly J. Bruce of Amissville; one grandson, Carter J. Bruce of Amissville; two sisters, Mrs. A. Lorton Blankenbaker of Haywood, Va., and Mrs. Russell B. Swindler of Culpeper; and one brother, Loring Bruce of Winchester, Va.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department or the Washington Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
A graveside service for Mr. Bruce was held on Monday, Oct. 17, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cemetery in Woodville, with the Rev. Jennings Hobson III officiating. At the close of the service, a fox horn was sounded, sending the ringing notes which Mr. Bruce loved so well echoing again off the Blue Ridge foothills.
