“I think we owe it to her” to appoint her to the planning commission, Mr. Skowronski told the other council members. “I think we owe it to the town to have an alternative , point of view on the planning commission.”
After the vote, Mr. Wickens agreed with Mr. Skowronski that “Camille Harris is a very active woman, with a lot to contribute to the town.” But, the commission’s chairman continued, “the other two are just better suited for this spot. ”
Of Mr. Neufeld, Mr. Wickens said, “there should be a way for this young man to serve the town as well.”
Centel completes upgrade
Mayor Dean Morehouse told the council that he had met with representatives of Central Telephone Co. of Virginia (Centel), who told him that the company had completed its service upgrades during the first week of October. “They reiterated that they can’t fix problems if they are not called in.”
Mr. Wickens said he still had problems, “I couldn’t call until people finished talking on my private line. This doesn’t happen with most telephone companies in the Western world. To me, this is still not satisfactory.” He added that he would be willing to introduce a motion declaring Centel in violation of their franchise contract, “and invite them to a public hearing to explain” their position.
“And the other thing,” Mr. Wickens continued, “if I can overhear other people’s calls, I’ve got to wonder how many of my own calls have been eavesdropped on. . .It’s intolerable, to be able to listen in on business calls.”
