Rappahannock County High School's soccer team continues to set a record for most wins in a single season. The team now boasts six victories against four defeats, “the best ever” according to Coach Richard Dietz.
The team finished a tough fourgame week against Seton of Manassas last Friday, beating the prep team on their own field 3-1. The Panthers “spread the scoring around,” Coach Dietz said, with goals by Jay Butler, Teemu Huuhtanen and Gregorio Bustos.
“They were out there playing good soccer,” Coach Dietz said of the effort. Seton scored first, and Butler evened the score at 1-1 before the half ended. The Panther’s two exchange students put the visitors up and added an insurance goal in the second half to clinch the victory.
“Four games in six days — against four very tough opponents — is asking a lot of the kids,” Coach Dietz added. “But it was a very good team effort.”
He had particular praise for goalie Philip Daczewitz, who played every minute of the four games. “He played a very good game Friday. He was very tired and physically abused.”
Friday’s victory followed a difficult defeat by Randolph-Macon Academy in Front Royal last Wednesday. Despite outshooting RMA 35-11, the Panthers lost the game 2-0.
“I could have gone out on the field with a wheelbarrow full of $100 bills — we couldn’t buy a goal that day,” Coach Dietz chuckled. “We hit the crossbar, the goal post, the goalie. We hit everything but the inside of the goal.”
Rappahannock is now focusing on its next game Friday against George Mason. It begins at 4 p.m. at RCHS. “Without the distractions of other * games we could concentrate on them. It should be a good game,” Coach Dietz predicted.
