“There was definitely more motivation on the second test, particularly among the older students,” Dr. Gangel noted.
“We worked psychologically on the older students,” added RCHS math teacher Helen LaCava. Instuctors emphasized the seriousness of the tests and urged children to try harder for the retest, she said. The prodding worked in many cases, she added, citing one student who originally ranked in the 17th percentile but moved up to the 55th percentile on the retest. “Some of the kids learned that they can produce if they really put forth the effort. I think we can make a difference because the numbers are small enough now,” said Mrs. LaCava, who is coordinating the math remediation program at RCHS.
