important. In the Wild West, there were few persons and little privacy to suffer from careless or deliberate acts of over-exuberant or vicious men. Today, everyone knows the damage that results from irresponsible acts: driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs; careless hunting; sleeping on the job; or the slovenly upkeep of an airliner. Our free economic, political and social systems cannot long endure unless individuals and groups exercise their freedoms with responsibility.
Learning to act responsibly, another way of grasping the necessary limitations to one’s freedoms, is simply the process of growing, of maturing. How children mature depends partly on what they are taught and partly on what others (parents, teachers, friends) expect of them.
This applies in good measure to everyone: peoples’ expectations are the principal determinant of the performance of individuals, governments, businesses, labor unions, media and entertainment organizations. In recent decades, generally speaking, we Americans have failed in this regard. Probably without so intending, Democratic policies have encouraged this unfortunate development. How? By supporting “liberal” education, entertainment, criminal punishment and other policies, leading to declinimg social expectations and standards.
The second key principle undergirding the Republican Party is the belief in the superiority of the free market. We recognize that it is not perfect, as nothing is on earth. It can be abused, as can every human institution. But, proven in practice for the past two centuries, it produces the greatest wealth for the greatest number; its advances in all areas have made the free market, or capitalist, economies the envy of all others: look at communist Russia and China!
As with personal freedom, free markets function best When their practitioners exercise economic freedom with responsibility. Irresponsible managers, workers, unions and governments can damage and in time destroy this economic goose that produces golden eggs. The best businessmen with the most skilled and willing workers will not succeed when governments destroy the currency or block adjustments required by new developments or competition. The best government cannot save the free enterprise system if greedy businessmen abuse their responsibilities or workers think only of short-term advantages.
