I read with great interest Ms. Jane Gilmer Wilhelm’s letter (Rappahannock News, Oct. 13) concerning the American Civil Liberties Union. She cites six distinguished Americans, each of whom has offered a laudatory comment about the goals and principles of the ACLU. On closer examination, however, I realized that all six men are long dead and the comments were made 20 to 30 years ago.
What scares a great many Americans these days about the ACLU is the bizarre and threatening change in course it has undergone in recent years. Consider some goals from its 1986 “Policy Guide.” The ACLU argues that drugs should not be prohibited by law; that child pornography must be protected by the Constitution; that prostitution should be legalized; homosexuals must be allowed to become foster parents; school discipline must be strictly limited; that very few crimes should be punished by a jail sentence; that there fan be no military draft, even in wartime; churches and synagogues must not be allowed taxexempt status; that rating movies (X- or G-rated, for example) is unconstitutional, i.e., children of whatever age should be able to see any movie they choose; there must be no secret intelligence operations against terrorist organizations or other threats to U.S. security; that all foreigners overseas must be given the protection of the U.S. Constitution; and that the American Nazi Party and the Ku Klux Klan should be given full protection of the law even though they openly advocate violence, the overthrow of the
