Coach Uli Maeyer knew it was perhaps too good to last, but he still had high hopes for his Wakefield soccer team as they traveled to Petersburg for the St. Vincent de Paul Invitational tournament. “These were the big boys,” Coach Maeyer said, noting that the top soccer schools in the Commonwealth send teams to the tournament.
Despite its 9-0 record in regular season play, Wakefield suffered two defeats against only one victory in the three-day tournament. The tournament results brought the team’s record to 10-4. The school’s only two other losses came in a pre-season tournament against Charlottesville and West Albemarle high schools.
Paired against last year’s tournament runner-up and host St. Vincent, Wakefield played aggressive soccer from the opening moments and had many chances to score, “but could simply not put the ball into the net,” Coach Maeyer said. After a scoreless game, followed by a scoreless overtime, the Owls lost the contest in a shootout.
