The third principle recognized by Republicans is that the political and economic freedoms Americans cherish require a healthy society. Virginians are learning, in a somewhat analogous case, that animal and plant life cannot long survive in a polluted Chesapeake Bay. Democrats have seen and acted to resolve Chesapeake Bay’s pollution; it is strange that the connection between our freedoms and the general health of American society seems to have eluded them.
It is a regrettable fact that in recent decades we have seen a severe decline in the health of American society. Do you wonder what that means? The signs are everywhere: in the growth and casual acceptance of drugs; in the widespread littering and other abuse of the environment; in expanding rates of divorce and illegitimate births; in declining student achievement and test scores; in growing rates of criminal activities of all kinds and the widespread lowered standards of personal and institutional integrity; in the growth of a semi-permanent welfare class amidst unfilled jobs, and of wolfish speculators who amass fortunes, not by contributing to improved industry but by using “inside information” to profit at the expense of the ordinary saver and investor. All these result from the exercise of freedom without responsibility.
