porations and a sales tax on real estate. Both were defeated by the state legisture.
• In 1985, he opposed the repeal of his own 1975 ‘temporary’ 7.5 percent income tax surtax. When 138,000 voters put it on a referendum he changed his mind — now he takes credit for it.
• In 1986, he opposed the tax limitation and spending cap. The voters approved it 55 to 45 percent.
• For three years he pushed for Massachusetts Bank, a big state development bank. The Legislature defeated it each time.
• The state has lost over 90,000 industrial jobs since 1984, down 13 percent, while the nation gained two percent. Job growth in Mass, since 1981 now ranks 33rd in the nation.
• He says he has cut taxes five times in the last four years, but all those cuts were proposed by this committee — not by Dukakis — who opposed them.
At the Democratic Convention, Gov. Dukakis insisted, “this campaign is not about ideology, it is about competence.” Translated, this means he doesn’t wish to discuss ideology, which is easy to understand. All of Reagan’s victories were won by ideology. With national media help, Dukakis has been doing his best to conceal his liberalism; to appear moderate or even conservative.
This too, is not being very successful.
