The Shenandoah Valley Music Festival will present its series of outdoor concerts of symphonic, youth. New Orleans jazz, Scottish, and big band music. The Festival’s home base is on the grounds of the historic Orkney Springs Hotel in the beautiful Shenandoah Mountains of Virginia. This National Historic Landmark was built in the early 1800's and its completed renovation stands today as a tribute to grand resort hotels of that area.
Under the direction of William Hudson, the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra will return for its eleventh year at the Festival. Performances will include a concert of popular ballet suites on July 21 and Hayden’s Trumpet Concerto in D by the F.S.O. with special guest, Steven Hendrickson, trumpet player, on July 22. Also joining the F.S.O. are Peter Clegg, tenor, for a concert featuring George Gershwin’s and Broadway’s most popular hits on #’uly 28 and Thomas Schumacher, pianist, for a concert featuring Brahn’s Piano Concerto No. 1. on July 29. All F.S.O. concerts are at 8 p.m.
A special program for children on Saturday, July 22 at 2 p.m. will feature Dennis Kobray, pianist, who will portray Ludwig van Beethoven in a program complete with music, murals, and costume. Admission for children (through high school) is free and adult tickets are $3.
The Tannahill Weavers, will present the music of Scotland on Aug. 12 at 7 p.m. This exciting program will feature music with a rich blend of wind and string instruments; including bagpipe, violin, juitar, flute and vocals.
Labor Day weekend w’ill feature a Saturday, Sept. 2 New Orleans Jazz concert with Easy Smith and Friends, and on Sunday, Sept. 3 a big band concert by the Richard Bray Orchestra. The festive atmosphere will include balloons for children, hot dogs, and ice cream socials.
