To the editor:
I read with some concern last week’s story covering the public hearing on a proposed CATV ordinance. Once again, Mr. Heddleston and the Rev. Von Fange make their viewpoints perfectly clear to the general public.
With respect to their views on television and pornography, I would like to state the following: I agree that most television is presented in poor taste and not worth watching. Adults and children spend too much time watching television. And there is not a parent in his right mind who would allow his child to view socalled adult films.
Few would argue differently. But if an adult wishes to watch a certain television program or an adult film, I believe that decision is strictly up to the individual.
What Mr. Heddleston and the Rev. Von Fange have done by thrusting their moral viewpoints into the public forum is to have placed themselves into the public spotlight. Their controversial private views (controversial, because they wish to force them on the rest of us) made public, coupled with the fact that both are public school teachers, raises some interesting questions.
I raise these questions with genuine respect for them as teachers and as members of the community. I am not attacking their qualifications or their performances as teachers. They both appear to be quite eloquent, outspoken, and civic-minded individuals, and I am confident that
