The sale of the Rappahannock Library building to the Town of Washington was finally completed last Thursday when representatives of the town, the Board of Supervisors and the Library’s Board of Trustees signed the contract.
The county received $150,000 for the library, which was turned over to the Library Board. This money will be invested and combined with money being raised by the Friends of the Rappahannock Library, and possibly money the library hopes to receive from a Federal grant program to build a new library on land that has been donated by Washington’s Mayor Dean Morehouse and his wife Linda.
The library will be able to lease the building back for up to two years at one dollar per year. If the new library is not ready then, the library can rent the building on a month by month basis for up to an additional year at $1,100 per month.
This last provision wras the sticking point wrhen the Board of Supervisors dealt with the contract at its meeting. July 3.
After protracted negotiations the town and Library Board had agreed to leave the amount of rent for a third year open to further negotiation if necessary. The agreement at that point said the amount of rent would be between the cost of interest on a $50,000 loan and the interest on a $150,000 note.
