The hottest abortion issue in the Commonwealth in recent years has been related to parental consent legislation, requiring physicians to notify the parents of a minor prior to performing an abortion. The bill was successful in the House committee this year and cleared the House floor without trouble.

As in the past, the bill died on the Senate side in the 15-member Committee on Education and Health. The bill has never received more than five Senate committee votes.

Many legislators are predicting that all legislative attempts to limit abortion in Virginia would face the same fate.
