However both gentlemen appear to have trouble separating issues that can be described as ones between church and state, and they are both in favor of censorship. It is only fair to ask how this affects the material they cover in the classroom. For instance, in view of the fact that Mr. Heddleston is the English teacher at the high school, what literature is or is not allowed to pass through his personal censoring mechanisms?
Reverend Von Fange will be the new Earth Science instructor in the fall. The question entering my mind is how does he resolve creation versus evolution, and how does that affect his presentation of the earth’s history to the questioning teenage mind?
Usually one would not ask such things. But under the circumstances the questions are necessary because the act of censorship is the issiie, not whether Rappahannock County should regulate cable television companies.
Creating a public censor board is not the answer to questions of morality. The path to the answer for our children is fortunately (and sometimes, unfortunately) determined in the home and by the guidance from parents. Parenting is really the key here — not laws or committees studying w'hat should or should not be deemed obscene.
