The Rappahannock County Department of Socia Services is requesting the community’s assistance for i Castleton woman left homeless after a fire Dec. 22 whicl killed her husband and two children.
Michael Neal Schade, 35, and his sons Michael Gus tav, 5, and John Alexander, 2 1/2, died of smoke inhala tion in the fire which swept through their rented fram house on Route 615 near the Rappahannock/Culpepe County line. Mary Kearns Schade was at work at Con munications Corporation of America in Bostonwhen th fire started early last Friday morning.
According to Sheriff John Henry Woodward, the fir is believed to have started in the family’s Christmas tret which was set up near an electric baseboard heater in th living room.
Sheriff Woodward, who is also the chief of the Cast leton Community Volunteer Fire Department, said th> house was “past fully involved” when the fire was re ported by a neighbor. He lives within sight of the smal one-story house, and rushed directly to the scene whei the fire call was sounded. “By the time the first units goi there, there was only one wall left standing. ”
The fire, Sheriff Woodward said, was so intense thal it melted the breakers in the circuit box. “The smok< must have built up so fast that they never had a chance.”
Mrs. Schade left for work at about 11:45 p.m. Thurs day, the sheriff said. About 1:15 a.m., Shelby Frazier who owns the house and lives within 100 feet of it, got uf to put more wood in his stove. He told the sheriff that ht looked out the window, but saw no indication of anything amiss.
About 1:45 a.m., Mr. Frazier’s son-in-law got up and saw the fire, then telephoned the dispatch office with the alarm. It was then that Sheriff, Woodward saw the blaze
