Development
Though there were no particularly startling stories about development within the county this year, the pressures of the sprawling Northern Virginia suburbs continue to edge into Rappahannock County.
To our east, opponents of the huge South Wales development off Rt. 229 in Jeffersonton have challenged its water-discharge permit in court. And Fauquier County continues to grapple with development pressures, the most recent being a proposal for a massive residential and commercial area on the outskirts of Warrenton which would nearly double the size of the county seat.
In Rappahannock County, the requests for subdivision are much smaller in scale, but in a sparsely populated rural area the potential for impact remains great.
As the year ends, two such requests are pending, both of which will likely provide some indicator of the direction the county intends to go with regards to development.
