SAVING ENERGY COSTS
Hot water accounts for 85% of the cost of operating your dishwasher and 95% of your clothes washer costs. You can save 10% on dishwasher costs by not using the drying cycle. Just leave the machine door open. As for clothes washing, it costs 3 times more to do a hot wash, warm rinse cycle than a warm/cold one. Here, too, you can get by with 105-110 degree hot water. Also, drying clothes outside on a line.is free.
If you have a family of four and you each take a five minute shower every day, you use 20,000 gallons of hot water to shower per year. You can halve that amount by installing an inexpensive hot water restrictor in your shower head. It will cut the flow of water in half. You’ll get just as clean as you did before.
One final thing to consider; the addition of a passive solar green house to your home not only provides free heat to your home, it contributes space, light and resale value as well. Also, your back-up heating system is already built into your current home.
