“Jim Bill has always kept a very low profile in helping people,” Mr. Miller added. “When people were in trouble or down on their luck, and they turned to Jim Bill, they trusted him and he helped them. It went far beyond the practice of law.”
Aside from his legal practice and political interests, Mr. Fletcher also still runs the cattle business at his Thornton Hill Farm outside Sperry - ville.
He served as Master of Foxhounds for the Rappahannock Hunt for 30 years and was one of the principals responsible for the Hunt gaining a reputation throughout the foxhunting world as the hardest-riding anywhere. When you rode with Rappahannock, veteran foxhunters knew, you came prepared for a real workout.
Mr. Fletcher’s interests extend to flying and motorcycling as well. He got his pilot’s license while still a student at law school and keeps a Cessna at the grass airstrip on the familv’s Montpelier farm in the F.T. Valley.
For many years he rode off-road bikes as well as horses, inviting friends to ride the trails across the fields and woods in the F.T. Valley. He has given up dirt bikes and horses but still organizes motorcycle rides for a group of friends from Rappahannock and surrounding counties.
And when the group gathers, Mr. Fletcher still takes off in front, leading the pack on his Honda 750.
