“Acid rain impacts the entire ecosystem,” he sa’id. “We might be able to put limestone in a creek to help the trout, but that won’t stop the damage that might occur to trees, plants and other animals.”
“Both projects were started after environmental assessments were made to check the possible effects of limestone on water quality, the surrounding land, vegetation and wildlife,” Kelley said.
The public was asked to comment both on the environmental assessment and on the proposed studies.
Acid rain is generally caused when sulfates and nitrites from vehicles and industrial facilities enter the atmosphere and return to the ground during rainfall.
Atmospheric pollution from hundreds of miles away can be carried by winds and clouds before it deposits damaging chemicals into streams and forests.
The acids may be spread through dust, fog and rain and can kill many species of vegetation and aquatic wildlife by altering the sometime delicate environmental balances that must be maintained for the species to stay alive.
As many as 10 percent of the streams in the George Washington National Forest are already acidic. More than 50 percent are considered extremely sensitive, which means they have almost no buffering capacities which prevent acid rain from upsetting the natural conditions.
