Many of the calls to the emergency system concern substance abuse — alcohol and other drugs. Under the commitment and detention laws, substance abuse is considered a mental illness. With this type of client, the hospitalization is often for detoxification. There are separate inpatient programs for detox; one, New Hope, is strictly voluntary and only for persons who don’t need constant medical supervision. For those who need medications and may be in a physical crisis as they withdraw, there is a fully staffed medical unit.
Another crisis situation arises when a person expresses suicidal thoughts or threatens to commit suicide. These calls do not always result in a hospitalization, but they are taken seriously.
