September, fisheries biologists dumped limestone into Little Stony Creek, located west of Edinburg.

That project marked the first time in Virginia a neutralizer was used in a stream to try to counteract acid rain.

When 53 tons of limestone were placed in Little Stony Creek, acid levels improved from an acid measurement of 5.5 to a neutral 7.0. The water hgs remained close to neutral even after several inches of rainfall.

“These results are very encouraging,” Standage said. “What’s even better is that the limestone will continue to buffer the creek, making it less likely that future acid rain will cause damage.*’

In both creeks, studies to monitor the on-going effects will continue at least a year after limestone is added.

Standage said the Cedar Creek project will not only help to improve water conditions in that stream, it will allow fisheries biologists to study this method of improving water quality under diverse conditions in different locations.

“Right now, we don’t know what the limitations are,” Standage said. “This really is an experimental process.”

He stressed that more work must be done to solve acid-rain problems at the source, rather than just depending on new technology to clean up the effects of acid rain after it enters the environment.
