The year 1989 will be remembered by most as a time of momentous upheaval and change around the world, from the massacre of Chinese students in Beijing to the tearing down of the Berlin Wall.
But 1989 was also a time of progress and change in Rappahannock County and across Virginia. Several of the year’s top ten stories, as selected by the Rappahannock News, were not solely county stories but affected our county’s residents as well as our neighbors across the Commonwealth.
The year was remarkable in one other respect as well, marking the first time in a decade that the county’s landfill problems did not make the list of the year’s top stories. The Amissville landfill ran smoothly all year, and a recycling center was established there in the spring.
