Last year, 27 persons died as a result of July 4 weekend crashes on Virginia highways. Of the 18 persons killed in passenger vehicles 17 were not wearing safety belts. Ten of the fatal crashes were alcohol related. Three of the fatalities were bicyclists, two were motorcyclists and two were pedestrians.
