the “party line” services which teenagers can use to talk to eight to 10 other teen-agers or singles could call to talk to other singles. These calls usually cost $2.50 for the first minute and $.95 for each additional minute. The charges can mount up very quickly because when you are talking on the phone 10 minutes goes by very quickly. Also, your teen-agers may not fully realize the charges they are accumulating. Many parents have been surprised by phone bills of several hundred dollars before they realize that their teens are using these phone lines. Any way you look at this situation it is an opportunity for business to reduce their costs, and possibly sell something that the consumer may or may not want or even realize that they have purchased. The easiest way to avoid the charges is just not to use the numbers. But there are other methods you can use. Local phone companies in Virginia have made blocking available. This permits the consumer to block any excess to 900, 700 and 976 numbers from their home telephone.
