As high points in the music are hit, fireworks of various colors burst overhead, accenting the music and bringing perfection to the display.
“We send off a comet,” Mr. Morehouse said, giving an example of the coordination, which streaks across the sky at the point of the National Anthem which speaks of “the rockets’ red glare.
“Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t,” the mayor admitted, but in the display’s history there have been far more successes than failures. Last year, despite a soaking rain during the day that nearly washed out the display, the rockets went off on schedule. TTiere was only one dud, and one rocket which did not reach its full height.
“It’s a very special thing,” Mr. Morehouse said of the dispaly, a part of Washington’s Independence Day celebration made possible through the generosity and patriotism of Mr. and Mrs. Carrigan.
Two years ago, the Carrigans granted the town an easement to the deed for the Avon Hall property which will allow the town to use the site each year for its Independence Day celebration. Though Mr. Carrigan felt he could no longer undertake to produce the show himself, Mayor Morehouse explained, with his wife he undertook to assure the community that the show would always go on.
“He’s a very patriotic man,” Mr. Morehouse said of Mr. Carrigan.
