The congregation of Shiloh Baptist Church in WoodviUe had long felt that their church is indebted to lifetime member Howard H. Butler of Sperryville, and on June 23 they showed their appreciation.
In a service of praise, song and preaching which lasted nearly three hours, Mr. Butler’s service as chairman of its Board of Deacons and treasurer was recognized through tributes by friends and ministers.
The evening’s featured speaker was the Rev. J.A. Holmes, former moderator of the Wayland Blue Ridge Baptist Association and pastor of Canaan Baptist Church in Reva. The Canaan Baptist Church choir accompanied the Rev. Holmes and provided music during the service.
“We thought it was time to recognize Howard’s service and work - to the church and community,” one of the organizers explained. The church was filled to overflowing, with people left filling the aisles after all the seats were taken.
In addition to the Rev. Holmes, clergy who attended the service and participated in the appreciation included the Rev.
