“It was a really nice affair,” Mr. Butler said this week, which characteristic understatement. “There was good singing, and good preaching - the church was full.”
Many members of his family attended, including his wife Dorothy, daughters Nanette and Doretha, and his two brothers, two sisters and several nieces.
Several childhood friends also returned to Rappahannock County to join in the appreciation of their old friend. Dr. Charles Harrison, now a physician in Toledo, Ohio, and Charles Wallace, of Warrenton, North Carolina, were among those who joined in the celebration honoring Mr. Butler.
“They went back a long way,” Mr. Butler said, recalling that he joined Shiloh Baptist Church in 1934 when he was 12 years old. “They reminded me that was the same year that Franklin Roosevelt took office.”
Following the service, those in attendance joined in a supper provided by members of the congregation and the community. “There was a lot of wonderful food,” Mr. Butler reported. “It was a beautiful evening.”
