He said he had expected to need a fourth third-grade teacher for next year. The class which was in second grade last year had four sections and was one of the largest in the school. However, a check of the students at the end of this year indicates that only 66 will be expected in third grade next year. They can be fit into three sections. “The bubble diminished,” Dr. Gangel said.
As a result he recommended that the number of full-time regular teaching positions at the elementary school be reduced from 29 to 28. “The worst problem will be first grade,” he said. It is expected to have an average class size of 23 in three sections. The state recommends no more than 24 first grade students per teacher.
The board also approved hiring Mike Tupper, Mrs. Tupper’s husband, as a special education teacher at the high school. This leaves one upper elementary teaching position still open.
At Thursday’s meeting the board also approved paying final bills and transferring funds from one account to another so that no function runs at a deficit.
