Under E911 the dispatcher in the Sheriffs Office who receives an emergency call will be able to identify the telephone number and location of the house from which the call was placed. This information would appear on a computer screen when the call is received.
Mr. Pohling explained that bringing in E911 to Rappahannock County is complicated by the fact that Culpeper already has basic 911. As a result those Rappahannock residents with “987” and “937” exchanges are now routed through Culpeper when they dial 911.
A similar situation exists with Chester Gap and Huntly residents with “636” and “635” exchanges, Mr. Gilkey said. Those 911 calls are routed to Front Royal.
Mr. Pohling said that service to three locations in the county was not considered “worthwhile.” Those with “364” Fauquier County exchanges, “547” Culpeper exchanges and “999” Federal Forestry Service exchanges would not be included.
“It turned out to be a very complicated turf fight,” Mr. McCarthy said. “The problem is that Culpeper is so large, they don’t have the impetus to goto E911.”
