Park poacher
sentenced
Timmy C. Meadows of Elkton, was sentenced in U.S. Magistrate’s Court in Harrisonburg, Virginia, on June 5.
Meadows had been found guilty in March of illegal hunting in Shenandoah National Park and transportation of an illegally killed black bear, a violation of the Lacey Act.
Meadows was fined $500 and sentenced to 70 days in jail. He was also required to pay a $500 replacement cost for the black bear he killed.
Meadows was also placed on twoyear probation, which will begin following the 70-day incarceration period. The probation includes a twoyear ban on entering Shenandoah National Park.
The incident occurred on Dec. 14, 1988, in the Harris Cove trail section of Shenandoah National Park northeast of Elkton. A black bear was chased and treed by a pack of dogs then shot and killed by Meadows. He then dragged the bear out of the Park.
