$27,600 was moved from other line items which showed a year-end surplus to the cafeteria account to balance it and provide start up funds for next year.
Of that amount about $16,000 came from classroom instruction, about $8,000 from “office of the principal,” about $1,000 from “executive administrative services” which covers the superintendent’s office, and smaller amounts came from other accounts that showed funds remaining.
Once those transfers had been made there was $23,800 left over to be returned to the county’s general fund, but nearly $22,000 of that is for federal and state carryover programs. The school system will ask the Board of Supervisors to reappropriate those funds for next year, Dr. Gangel said.
Also the county received from the state about $12,000 more than had been estimated in Dr. Gangel’s budget projection last year. These funds will also be returned to the county’s general fund, but some of them will need to be reappropriated for the Piedmont Technical Education Center.
The School Board also tabled until the regular July meeting an amendment to the homework policy that recommends that teachers not exceed 15 minutes of homework for each major subject for children in kindergarten through third grade, 30 minutes per major subject for students in fourth through seventh grade, and 45 minutes per subject for high school courses.
