RICHMOND — Many of Virginia’s teenagers are preparing to venture into the workplace now that summer is here and schools have let out. The Department of Labor and Industry wants to remind employers and teens of the child labor laws regarding underage workers.
The following are general requirements for underage employment in Virginia:
• Children under 14-years-old: Generally, teens under 14 years of age cannot be employed to work in Virginia.
• 14 and 15-year-olds: In order to be employed 14 and 15-year-olds are required to obtain work permits by submitting three cerfitication forms which are available from the child’s high school, county, or independent city where he or she is to be employed. The three forms include, (1) a • Intention to Employ certificate which is completed by the prospective employer, (2) the Parent’s Permission for Employment, and (3) a Physician’s Certificate of Physical
