Clifton and June Clark of Red Oak Kennels recently received an article published in the Lufkin Daily News, Texas concerning the National Hall of Fame Cemetery of Fox Hounds near Shelbyville where a marker for their hound, Gangster Jake, has been placed.
The marker reads, “Noble by birth,” because Gangster Jake is the grandson of Henkel Shillings champion dog, Mark S. According to the article Mr. Schillings is known throughout the United States and Canada for the national awards the Walker foxhounds have won that he has bred since 1916.
Mr. Clark is quoted in the article, in reference to Gangster Jake, “I’ve never seen one like him, he never gave up. He had so much endurance, you’d have to run him down to catch him. He was an outstanding hound.”
Mr. Clark also noted that all hounds cannot be buried at the cemetery, only those with special records. To date only 23 dogs from 14 states are honored with markers at the national Hall of Fame Cemetery of Fox Hounds near Shelbyville.
The Clarks lost Gangster Jake to cancer on May 31,1974, at the age of 14.
