• 16 and 17-year-olds: There are no hour restrictions for 16 and 17year-olds, and no work permit is required. However, they are also prohibited from working in certain hazardous occupations.
There are Federal child labor provisions which may differ from Virginia law. When these provisions differ, the most stringent standard must be observed. Employers should contact the closest office of the Wage and Hour Division of the U.S. Department of Labor for questions regarding federal child labor laws.
