Water study
finds few
surprises

The Extension Service’s Water Quality Testing Program has delivered its results to the 236 households which participated, and for the most part, the county’s private water supplies are of good quality.
The testing, which was funded by a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture, tested nearly 10 percent of the 2,704 households in the county. The program was voluntary, with the samples spread evenly through the county’s five magisterial districts. A total of 50 samples were scheduled to be taken from each district, although 14 of those households which signed up did not submit samples for testing.
From the Health Department’s perspective, according to District Sanitarian Charles Shepard, the most significant finding was that 40 percent, or 78 of the 195 households which requested a test for coliform contamination, tested postive. That indicates, he explained, that surface water is somehow leaching into the water supply.
