Praising Virginia’s instant check system, Mr. Slaughter noted, “The Commonwealth of Virginia has taken the lead nationwide to develop an accurate^ instant check on the record of those individuals attempting to purchase firearms (our criminal justice records are 98 percent accurate). Obviously, this is a system I would like to see adopted across the country.” The Congressman continued, “Until all the states improve their criminal record keeping so they can develop their own instant background checks, I believe that a seven day waiting period (for those states without a system comparable to Virginia’s) represents a reasonable, temporary alternative.”
Rep. Slaughter concluded, “The success of Virginia’s law has encouraged law enforcement officials throughout the nation and creatively shown how we can make it more difficult for criminals to obtain the weapons they seek.”
