directly back to Culpeper County so that the response is not delayed,” Mr. McCarthy said.
“Culpeper County would be doing it as a favor to us,” he added, but since the vast majority of the customers on that exchange live in Rappahannock County, it makes more sense for Rappahannock to handle the calls rather than the busier dispatch office in Culpeper.
Mr. McCarthy said a final decision on whether the switch will be made is waiting on a study paper from C&P Telephone.
Centel Telephone Company, which recently installed digital switching technology in Washington’s “675” exchange, can now handle 9-1-1 calls on that exchange, according to service representative Ken Bartels.
If an agreement can be reached with Culpeper County to switch the “987” exchange, Mr. McCarthy said, about one-half of the county’s telephone subscribers will be able to use 9-1-1 to call for help in an emergency.
“It’s a convenience that I think we ought to get people used to,” he said, especially for those who have moved here from elsewhere, and for children who see 9-1-1 listed as an emergency number on television and in school. “It will make the switch to ‘Enhanced’ 9-1-1 easier.”
