A special gathering of five extraordinary singers will perform an evening of songs at the Bluemont Concert Series Warren Green Concert on Saturday, Aug. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in Warrenton.
For our “Evening of Songs,” Bluemont has gathered together five extraordinary singers from around the country for a weekend of stunning harmony singing. Larry Gordon and Liz Thompson of the Bayley-Hazen Singers of Vermont, Melissa Dunning and Molly Andrews of the Jubilo chorus of Virginia and Malcolm Dalglish, singer, composer and virtuoso hammer dulcimer player from Indiana will join together for this special performance.
This concert will present a rich variety of vocal music including 13th Century processionals and motets, British and American folk ballads, shape note songs and contemporary works. All in all it will be a feast of fine singing.
The centerpiece of the program is Malcolm Dalglish’s marvelously evocative cycle of songs “Hymnody of the Earth.” The musical roots of this masterpiece can be found in Shaker hymns, Southern Sacred Harp tradition and Georgia Sea Island songs coupled with the poetry of Kentucky poet Wendell Berry.
Malcolm Dalglish is an accomplished singer and a master hammer dulcimer player with long experience as a traditional music performer. He is perhaps best known as a founder and past member of the trio Metamora.
Larry Gordon and Liz Thompson are founding members of Vermont’s Bayley-Hazen singers which have sung throughout New England and the Eastern United States and toured Eastern Europe. Larry Gordon is one of the country’s leading exponents and leaders of music from the early American singing school tradition.
Melissa Dunning and Molly Andrews have sung solo and as a duo in the greater Washington area for many years. Both women have diverse musical backgrounds. Melissa Dunning has sung with the Word of Mouth Chorus, the Boston Camerata and Hesperus; her solo singing includes programs for Bluemont and at the Smithsonian Institution. Molly Andrews has sung for the Augusta Heritage Festival and the People’s Music Network and has opened for such performing artisits as Holly Near.
